Business meetings, corporate presentations, business visits, press conferences, technical seminars and conventions are some common events in the routines of major enterprises. In order for them to achieve the expected outcome, however, it is crucial for communications to be transmitted to the audience faithfully and appropriately, and when intended for a foreign audience, an Interpreter can be very valuable.

Unlike written translation, interpreting demands other skills and qualifications. In this case, the professional verbally translates speech in real time, taking the speaker’s style and tone into account, as well as the content approach, cultural and terminology characteristics used by the speaker.

In addition to in-depth knowledge of the source and target languages, the interpreter must have focus and attention to detail, mastery of interpreting methods and techniques, knowledge of the segment-specific terminology used, and great discernment to ensure the quality of the service provided.

Another key point is that this service comprises two types: consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting. We will explain each of them in detail below.

Consecutive Interpreting

Consecutive interpreting is performed without the use of audio equipment or resources. This process is called consecutive because the two people involved in the process (speaker and interpreter) never speak at the same time.

In this case, the speaker’s speech is divided into blocks, and the information is translated for the target audience in the intervals between these blocks.

Although it doesn’t match the speaker’s natural speech and it takes more time than Simultaneous Interpreting, this service suggests greater translation accuracy, because the professional hears what is said, takes notes, and only then orally translates what was said.

Simultaneous Interpretation

This service in turn is technically more difficult, because the Interpreter optimizes presentation time by immediately translating speech, which consequently facilitates understanding of the content communicated by the speaker.

Here, the interpreter listens to the speaker through a sound system, quickly understanding and processing the information, translating it into another language and transmitting it to the listeners without interruptions during the process. Equipment is used for this, such as sound-proof booths, microphones, audio transmission devices, and earphones for the audience.

Because this format demands extreme concentration and agility, a pair of interpreters must be hired per event, taking turns in providing the service. This keeps the professionals from being overloaded and ensures translation quality.
